The hidden story of patterns created over 10 years
“KBP Patterns” covers about 100 patterns of the design fabric brand Kitty Bunny Pony (KBP) founded in 2008. The book consists of four chapters: brand story, patterns, interviews, and index. The founder and director of KBP Kim Jinjin introduce each pattern along with the motivation for designing, design and production techniques, sales volume, and various episodes.
The author, who has grown KBP into an international brand, talks about changes in dailylife before pattern design. She finds the elements of patterns from her daily life from children’s toys, floor pattern of the amusement park, works during her school days. And designs and used that pattern into a part of her daily life again. This cycle in which the patterns found in daily life become part of daily life again is implied in the brand slogan “Life in Patterns”.
The motif of book design is a selvage, cut off in the production process. All images are scanned by an ultrahigh-resolution fabric scanner to show the patterns without any distortion but with its original texture delivered. And carried out multiple experiments in paper and resolution before actually making the book to avoid moiré in the fabric image, and to get vivid colors and enough brightness contrast even on matte paper, printed with an ultrahigh- resolution UV offset printer.
