KBP® X Jessica Nielsen
Blue Seaweed is a design by Jessica Nielsen that represents the seaweeds, the beautiful forest in the sea. The pattern features a white base with refreshing blue-colored patterns, creating a clean image.
Jessica Nielsen is a Dutch visual artist with Danish roots. She has a clear love for nature, which can be seen in her work.
Her signature style is one of bold and bright designs, all of which are at once minimal, colorful, and brimming with energy.
When and how did your pattern design journey begin?
I started out as a graphic designer and illustrator 10 years ago. Along the way I discovered my love for patterns and slowly I shifted my focus to patterns entirely. Kittybunnypony was one of the first companies to license my pattern designs.
You have been working on various patterns with kittybunnypony for quite a long time. How and for what reason did you come to collaborate with kittybunnypony?
Our first collaboration was in 2014. I shared my pattern catalogue with kittybunnypony; fortunately they liked my designs, and chose three of them to create different products. One of them was 'Tulip', a pattern with bold white tulips.
Geometric and nature-based patterns feature frequently in your collaborative work with kittybunnypony. What are you trying to express when designing patterns?
My patterns are inspired by nature. I enjoy 'translating' flowers, leaves, fruits, birds and other animals into stylised and powerful shapes. I leave out unnecessary lines and use spare colors, so my work is quite minimal. This way, viewers can have their own interpretation of my designs.
When I think of the Netherlands, flowers come to mind. How does the natural environment in Rotterdam influence vour work?
Unfortunately, Rotterdam isn't a very green city. But I can still find inspiration by taking walks around my neighborhood, visiting a botanical garden, or going to my favorite flower shop. You can find inspiration even in a busy concrete forest if you look at the world around you with curious eyes.
What have you taken away from the experience of working with kittybunnypony versus working solo?
I like that kittybunnypony isn't afraid to use design to make a statement. Kittybunnypony can still pull together an elegant, coherent collection with big prints and bold colors. Over the years, kittybunnypony has chosen many of my designs to make patterns for their fabrics. I'm very proud to be part of kittybunnypony's beautifully crafted world.
